From time to time someone says the Bible is old. That it no longer serves our era, that it needs to be updated, that it should be politically correct. The saddest part is that this conversation doesn’t come only from outsiders. It also comes from people who carry the evangelical label and who, little by little, have placed our one rule of faith and practice in the background-if not in the fifth place.
This book was born from a discomfort and a conviction. The discomfort is seeing so many people calling themselves Christian without knowing what the Bible says. The conviction is that God’s Word remains alive, effective, and sufficient, and that God’s people only stand firm when they are rooted in it.
Since the 1980s I have been doing the same thing: preaching and teaching so people understand the value of this book. I don’t know if I’m doing it right or wrong, but I am doing it. And I do it because, through experience, I know what the Word can accomplish. I was raised in a truly believing home. My father and mother planted the Word in my life at the coffee and lunch table. Even so, I got lost in the world. And it was that same Word that one day rescued me from Satan’s grasp. That is why I never give it up.
